A Fresh Start, Lonely at First

Anthony had barely unpacked when the quiet of his new town started to press in on him. Single and friendless, he felt the move was supposed to be a new chapter, but each evening stretched empty. So he decided to adopt a dog, figuring a companion would break the silence. He leafed through a local newspaper and found a listing for a black Labrador. The shelter said plenty of people had called, but the dog was still available because none of them fit. Anthony hung up and drove over at once.

Tank, Not Reggie

The letter was signed by Paul Mallory, an M1 Armor Crewman in the U.S. military. He'd written that if anything happened to him, the army should call the shelter and give his dog up. Mallory didn't come home; he was posthumously awarded a Silver Star for saving fellow soldiers. The letter told Anthony the dog's real name was Tank, not Reggie, and that he'd respond to it eventually. It also warned that Tank loved tennis balls — he could fit two in his mouth — and would chase them near the road, so toss carefully. He knew sit, roll over, shake, and high-five, but the vet was not his favorite place.

One Word Changed Everything

After finishing the letter, Anthony folded it and looked at the sad dog. He whispered, "Tank." The Lab whipped his head around, tail wagging, eyes going soft. Anthony told him, "It's me now, Tank, just you and me. Your old pal gave you to me. So what do you say we play some ball?" Tank tore out of the room and came back with a mouthful of tennis balls. From that moment, the two were inseparable. Anthony later shared the story on social media, describing how a single name had unlocked the dog's heart.
